The Lao Heritage Program offers instruction in basic and intermediate Lao literacy to both native and non-native speakers of Lao. In the course of two months of intensive study, you'll learn the alphabet and basic sight words and work with simple authentic texts in Lao to begin to understand more deeply the various sources of Lao tradition, both in Laos and in a Lao-American context.
As you master the basics, or from Week One on if you already know the basics, you'll move on to increasingly complex texts dealing with Lao Buddhism, History, Arts, and current Lao ways of dealing with the "modern" world. In addition, you'll learn to use spoken Lao in more formal ways, to discuss educated subjects beyond simply home and family topics, although those are important as well.
